Why do we know more about the economic future of minerals under the ground in a small town than we do about any boy or girl in an elementary school? Educational inequality exists within and between countries with marginalised groups often denied access to schools with adequate resources. This exists across gender, race and socioeconomic class, both within and outside the classroom – for example, studies have shown students from disadvantaged families lose up to 40% of learning over the summer break.
Learn Capital backs and builds transformative companies which use technology to reduce inequality of opportunity within and between countries, improving educational outcomes and helping excluded groups get better access to learning. Their thesis is that humans have extraordinary potential but often lack the tools and resources they need to realise that potential.
Learn Capital is a pioneer as the first venture capital firm focused exclusively on education technology. It has used this first mover advantage to establish itself as a leader in the sector having backed more breakout EdTech companies than any other fund. Snowball invested in their fifth fund. Why Snowball invested
Learn Capital Fund V Growth
Investing in education is not only complex operationally but also from an impact perspective. Some believe the sector should remain the preserve of the state, and digitisation can threaten good quality, unionised jobs. Further, Learn is not necessarily your traditional impact manager. With a Silicon Valley background and mindset, the founders are culturally different from many of those working in impact investing. The team believes in the power of the markets and that competition can drive better outcomes in education, not a universally held view. So, how did we get comfortable with Learn?
