The Lyme Timber Company is an established manager with a solid track record that specialises in investing in working forests. These forests have multiple positive impacts beyond timber production, including carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat conservation, water quality protection, and creating forest sector jobs in rural communities that typically have few employment opportunities.
Lyme pioneered the sale of working forest conservation easements (WFCEs) on forestland, demonstrating that conservation can enhance investment performance. The Fund’s core investment strategy focuses on strategically acquiring forest lands with high conservation value and collaborating with public agencies and non-governmental organisations to place these WFCEs that permanently restrict development and preserve natural resources, while still allowing revenue generation from sustainable timber harvesting and recreational leasing.
Snowball invested in Lyme Forest Fund V in 2018. As of 2023, Lyme Forest Fund V has deployed 90% of its committed capital across 868,009 acres, demonstrating steady growth. Revenue streams are diversified across sustainable timber harvesting, conservation easements, and carbon credit sales. Lyme consistently outperforms the benchmark NCREIF Timberland Index. Timberland protects against inflation and is less correlated to other asset classes.
All forestlands managed by Lyme are third-party certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and/or Forest Stewardship Council, ensuring adherence to the highest sustainability standards. Notably, Lyme Forest Fund V has secured conservation easements across significant areas of land. Currently, they have secured funding for a 73,000-acre project in Michigan. The fund's efforts also include partnerships with state and federal agencies to protect critical habitats and support local biodiversity.

"Snowball was smart enough to join us as a Limited Partner in 2018 for our fifth fund. We are a timberland investment management organisation based in the US and Canada. We have defined a niche investing in natural forests with important conservation attributes identified by third parties such as The Nature Conservancy, state, federal and provincial natural resource management agencies."
